What Various Leaders Say
-
Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi
ViewHon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consistently emphasized the vital role of India’s handloom and handicraft sector in building a self-reliant nation. Recognizing the dedication and artistry of India’s weavers and craftsmen, he urged citizens to embrace and promote handmade products, which embody the spirit of our indigenous culture and heritage.
“Let us be #Vocal4Handmade. By choosing locally crafted products, we not only support livelihoods but also take a step towards achieving Aatmanirbhar Bharat (a self-sufficient India).”
The Prime Minister has personally championed this vision by gifting handmade items crafted by local artisans to world leaders, positioning himself as a true ambassador of Indian handicrafts. His appeal goes beyond economic revival — it’s a call to preserve the soul of India through conscious consumerism and cultural pride.

Shri Shashi Tharoor
ViewShri Shashi Tharoor (Member of Parliament), in his widely acclaimed speech at the Oxford Union, powerfully highlighted the economic exploitation and deindustrialization of British India. He particularly emphasized the systematic destruction of India’s handloom weaving industry, once celebrated globally for its exquisite craftsmanship.
“Indian handloom weavers, renowned for producing fine muslin as light as woven air, were reduced to poverty. The British dismantled this thriving industry—smashing looms, crippling artisans, and imposing crushing tariffs on Indian textiles—while simultaneously flooding global markets with machine-made goods from Britain’s ‘dark, satanic mills’.”
He pointed out that this colonial strategy transformed India from a leading exporter of textiles to an importer, reducing its share of global trade from 27% to less than 2%.
This legacy of destruction stands in stark contrast to India’s current efforts to revive and celebrate its rich handloom heritage. Supporting Indian artisans today is not just about culture—it’s about historical justice.

Smt. Smriti Z Irani
ViewSmt. Smriti Z Irani, Union Minister for Minority Affairs, proudly stated,
“Handloom can enrich our daily lives and surroundings in many ways — from clothing and furnishings to wall hangings. Bring home what’s handmade in India. I take immense pride in celebrating India’s legacy. I am #Vocal4Handmade.”
Her words resonate deeply with India’s ongoing movement to revive and promote its rich handloom and handicraft traditions. With centuries-old weaving practices and indigenous crafts still thriving across rural India, choosing handmade is not only a tribute to cultural heritage but also a step towards sustainable and ethical living.
From everyday wear to artistic home décor, handloom products bring with them stories of craftsmanship, legacy, and care. As the government continues to spotlight these sectors, voices like Smt. Irani’s inspire citizens to consciously support local artisans and strengthen India’s journey toward Aatmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India).
